Jumat, 03 Februari 2012
U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, Thursday, revealing details of military budget cuts which reach half a trillion dollars within the next 10 years.
As a result of these cuts, some elements of the U.S. military must also be sacrificed, including the reduction of the number of personnel. In ten years into the future, ground forces will be reduced to 100,000 personnel.
Reporting from CNN, Panetta said the cuts and savings will begin in October this year, at the beginning of fiscal year 2013. A total of U.S. $ 33 billion will be reduced in the military budget. Over the next 10 years, the military will save up to U.S. $ 487 billion.
To overcome the lack of budget, Panetta said the army would be streamlined. He explained that the U.S. army numbering 556,000 will be reduced to 490,000 personnel. Naval personnel which amounted to 200,000 people, will be reduced to 182,000 people.
"The military will be fewer and slimmer, but will be more nimble, flexible and can be lowered quickly with more advanced technology," said Panetta.
Besides reduced in number, the salaries of the soldiers also will be cut in 2015. 2013 and 2014, Panetta promised salary paid in full. In addition, savings will also impact on health-care benefits for retired soldiers.
With the reduction of personnel, two of the four brigades in Europe would be sent to military bases. However, rotation of duties between the placement of troops overseas will be accelerated. This is to give them the opportunity to train with NATO team, so it's ready whenever needed lowered.
The U.S. Navy also will no longer use their old ship without ballistic missile launchers. A total of seven ships attack and two smaller amphibious ships will not be used anymore. The Navy also forced to postpone the purchase of dozens of new ships for a year or more.
For the Air Force, Panetta says no to use again six squadrons of fighter jets and one training squadron. In addition, Panetta urged air force to fly less frequently, in order to save fuel. "But this measure would not reduce our ability to control the air war," said Panetta
Austerity measures had previously delivered by President Barack Obama in the exposure of U.S. military strategy in the future. Obama said the U.S. will face only one major war in the future. In addition, Obama said, the U.S. military will focus on placing their forces in Asia. (Ren)
